Consider the level geometry, it is significantly more in line with the rest of the Classic games than anything in the Adventure games (Except green hill zone in sa2, which rather than being a part of south island is instead its own isolated isle.) overall cartoony. Heroes would seem to take place after Adventure 1&2, but that's exceedingly unlikely. ANY game without humans is Classic canon. The echidnas built the ancient ruins no matter the canon, so it could be assumed that there's a population of animals currently existing in Classic Canon. Any buildings in the Classic canon can be determined as either Eggman's or built by other creatures like sonic. MEANWHILE, in the Classic universe, the classic games last a very short time before Sonic Pocket Adventure occurs and introduces the new designs, making Classic and Adventure universes identical in terms of character design. Radical tectonic shifts have occurred resulting in very different continental structure, and the human population has become VERY different, showing bizzare disfiguration in even the elderly, meaning that humanity has mutated rather drastically. That's dealt with, but by the time we see Unleashed (or World Adventure) we can see the effects of these disasters on earth and its people. In the true ending of ShTH, the black comet is warped to the surface of earth and quickly plants its tendrils into it, while simultaneosly emitting a paralyzing gas. During SA1&2, Earth is geographically identical to the way we know it to be. It was (admittedly handwaved) that the moon turned to face earth again after it was partially desroyed, as seen in the introduction of Shadow the Hedgehog. ![]() ![]() There are very few games that take place in the Adventure canon: Sonic Adventure 1 & 2, Shadow the Hedgehog, (debatably Sonic 06), and Sonic unleashed (Or as it is known in Japan, Sonic World ADVENTURE.) SA1 establishes the Adventure Canon, and SA2 has a very important event: The moon being destroyed. This actually answers way more questions than it creates, and here's why: So, there was a recent interview that explains that there are 2 universes: The one where humans exist (I'll call it the adventure canon), and the one where they do not (the Classic? canon).
